The new black is big data and big data visualization. You’ve probably heard or read about it before. But what does it really mean?
More and more people use the internet on a daily basis. Search engines, web shops and social media. It’s all part of our daily routines. People share huge amounts of data and we’re not just talking photos and status updates.
Every time we google a pair of shoes, buy a plane ticket or visit a website we leave digital fingerprints. As a result we leave huge amounts of data. Big data.
INTERNET OF THINGS
But it does not stop here. If you have your cell phone on you (and who doesn’t these days), and you go into a store, the company logs it. When you go by the library, or your local store it will be logged through your phone.
Wherever you are and have your phone with you, you are tracked and your habits are used as data. It’s called “The Internet of Things”.
YOU’RE BEING WATCHED
This means for example that people who want to start – let’s say a cafe – can find information about on which streets of the City is most used. And thus WHERE their new café should be open to get the most customers in the store. Smart isn’t it?
FINGERPRINTS TURNS INTO BIG DATA
When we use the internet we leave digital fingerprints or footprints, and we are potential customers or stakeholders. When we leave information on the web we create new opportunities for companies – without breaking any rules about data protection or privacy settings.
Imagine that you’ve just checked out plane tickets from United Airlines on the internet, but you didn’t buy anything. On that occasion this leaves cookies on your computer. Next time you visit the site, the tickets are now more expensive. Magic? No, just big data working against you.
BIG DATA – A GOLD MINE FOR COMPANIES
If a company look at both corporate data and big data, they access a gold mine of information. But big data is hotchpotch of information, and with all that data it can be difficult to spot trends.
BIG DATA VISUALIZATION = OVERVIEW OF DATA
Big data visualization help companies get an overview of all the data. Data visualization helps corporations to structure all this information, thus to understand it. This creates transparency in the data – and help companies build their business decisions on evidence based data.
A GOOD DATA VISUALIZATION?
New studies show that visualizations are easy to understand and remember if human recognizable objects are incorporated. This means that photographs, images of people, cartoons, comics or logos help your brain remember and understand heavy chunks of data. But note, a bad visualization is PACKED with images and too much text. Just remember – “Less is more”.
